China

China produces the greatest amount of pollution that causes climate change, so slashing its emissions is crucial to stabilize the climate.

To reach its ambitious goal by 2060 of balancing the pollution it creates with the amount it removes from the atmosphere, China will need to take ambitious action in the next few years.

EDF is sharing its best scientific and economic expertise by working with leaders and communities in China to help the country cut pollution faster and stay on track to meet its long-term climate goals.

Areas of work

We’ve been working in China since 1991 with a variety of partners to tackle climate change and pollution. Here’s an overview of the work we do:

Carbon pricing and emissions trading

  • Helped launch China’s national carbon market in 2021 — the largest in the world.
  • Support industries in reducing emissions through market-based tools.
  • Improve carbon market design, data quality and policy coordination.

Industrial low-carbon transition

  • Assist key industries like steel, cement and petrochemicals in cutting emissions.
  • Promote green finance and policy support to meet China’s carbon neutrality goals.

Cutting methane emissions

  • Use science and technology to reduce methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
  • Host the annual China Methane Summit to share solutions and drive action.

Clean air innovation

  • Develop mobile and satellite-based air pollution monitoring systems.
  • Partner with cities to build smart, local air quality tracking networks.

Climate-smart agriculture

  • Work with farmers and food companies to reduce emissions and boost resilience.
  • Support sustainable farming through training, finance and global partnerships.

Regional energy transition

  • Lead the “Beautiful Yellow River 2035” project to balance energy, water, food and ecology in one of China’s most climate-sensitive regions.

Corporate partnerships

  • Promote green supply chains by helping companies reduce pollution and improve sustainability.
  • Collaborate with businesses to meet environmental goals.

Climate-resilient oceans and fisheries

  • Support sustainable fishing practices and marine biodiversity.
  • Help China adapt fisheries to climate change and protect ocean ecosystems.
